Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senators Roy Blunt (Mo.) and Claire McCaskill (Mo.) today commended Senate passage of their legislation that would permanently designate May 1 as Silver Star Service Banner Day. Blunt and McCaskill have introduced annual resolutions to honor our nation's wounded and ill service members and veterans, and their families.

"The freedom and security that we enjoy every day as Americans would not be possible without the sacrifices of our military men and women," Blunt said. "Our nation's service members put themselves in harm's way to keep our families safe, and many of them carry wounds or illness from their service for the rest of their lives. I'm pleased the Senate passed this measure, and I urge my colleagues in the House to support this effort to mark every May 1st as a national day to honor Silver Star service members, veterans, and family members."

McCaskill continued, "Our efforts to mark Silver Star Service Banner Day were unanimously approved by the full Senate--a recognition that speaks to the importance of our gesture of gratitude to the extraordinary heroism of servicemembers injured while serving this country. I know I join with all Missourians in saluting the Missouri men and women whose sacrifices help keep us safe."

Earlier this month, the Senate passed a resolution introduced by Blunt and McCaskill that designated May 1, 2017, as Silver Star Service Banner Day.

Silver Star Families of America is a national non-profit program headquartered in Clever, Mo.

The organization honors and assists members of the Armed Forces and their families from every branch of service and from all wars.
